Part 1 RPG Training

ROLEPLAYING ETIQUETTE

Just a few rules of etiquette and common practice for you to remember:

  • Don't use colors or weird formatting. Mimic other players on this point. Sometimes different colors are used for different characters' dialogue. Follow what's already going on or make a polite suggestion to your GM.

  • Grammar, grammar, grammar, and punctuation! I can't emphasize how frustrating it is to see a post that doesn't have capital letters or proper punctuation. It's disrespectful and it makes you look like an amateur.

  • Spelling! Same thing here, especially with character names. Go back and look to make sure you get a character's name right. It's just plain rude to not. Don't assume you got it right.

  • Write a "decent length." Again, look around you. If a few paragraphs is the norm, then write a few paragraphs. The newest members aren't expected to write very much as they're getting used to roleplaying, but it always helps to write more. Still, quality over quantity! Part 2 will talk about how to create meaningful and longer posts, so don't stop here with Part 1.

  • Be mindful of power. Chances are, your character can't out-power the 10-year veteran of the group. If your RPG users points and levels, be mindful of how and who you attack.

  • And....as I cannot say this enough time....ask your GM! They would rather be "bothered" with questions than have to ask you to redo a post. Believe me....it's awkward for everyone.

And finally:

  • Don't let someone godmod your character. That isn't cool and they need to learn. If you don't feel comfortable confronting them yourselves, bring it up with the GM. GMs have some control over what happens to your character, but they cannot speak or think for your character (unless it's mind control or something like that).

  • Be polite and respectful. Tempers and blows may fly IC, but keep it nice OOC. Kindly refrain from excessive IC abuse and by no means you should abuse or disrespect other players OOC. In other words, don't be a jerk. Use your brain.
