COMBO POSTS

Of special mention is one more thing you'll sometimes encounter in an RPG: combo posts. Essentially, these are events in which you and another player/GM (or more than one!) work together to write a post. These often occur if a lot of dialogue is planned or if several short actions are likely to take place. They can be a bit confusing at first, but once you've done one or two you'll get the hang of it. Now, I'm going to use two different highlight colors to illustrate how two different players would write a combo. Basically, the idea is to write a little bit back and forth with your partners, and a single, longer post will form. The GM will tell you what basic direction to go in. Just ask if you're unsure.

Character 3 slammed down the hatch of the shuttled, breathing heavily with exhaustion and relief. The shuttle was on automatic pilot, and thus would carry them to their destination without any input of their own. "You know," he said to his companion with a laugh that contrasted sharply with the skirmish they'd just survived. "I was pretty sure we were dead there."

Character 2 entered the shuttle close behind, strapping himself into one of the seats. He hated automatic pilot, much preferring to take control of his own life, thank you very much. Likewise, he did not share his companion's carefree attitude. "It wouldn't have been so close if you hadn't have tripped the alarms," he snapped. "We were nearly killed!" Charater 2 didn't even want to look at Character 3 after what had happened. Too close. Too close.

The most Character 3 had to offer to that was a ridiculously enthusiastic grin. "Awwww...come on. It was fun. We lived. The story goes on. No use fretting over it. He could have cared less about danger or all that. They died, they died. Worrying was, to him, quite pointless and it just dulled the fun. He sat back in his seat, sighing and yawning casually. "You think they'd notice if we hijacked the ship and found something to eat?"

Character 2 was hungry, yes, but the mention of food at this time was hardly appropriate. He scoffed, staring hard at Character 3 with what was undeniably a sarcastic grin. "Suuure...maybe we can invite the rancor that nearly ate you. He certainly missed out on his meal time."

You may continue as long as you need or as is appropriate. Coordinate the stopping point with your partner and your GM. As with typical RPG posts, you may write more depending on the level of detail you use. Just keep in mind your partner is responding directly. Either your or your partner will post the paragraphs. The opening labels on the post should look something like:

COMBO POST
IC: Character 2 and Character 3
